Joan L. Huegel and Bookmark Collector

August 28th, 2006 · No Comments

Joan L. Huegel is an avid collector who published a fabulous newsletter titled Bookmark Collector for many years. Unfortunately, this little gem of a newsletter has stopped being published, although Ms. Huegel is still publishing a newsletter named P.A.C.T. (People and Collecting/Trading).

Although Bookmark Collector was published with the simplest of production values, it was filled with historical information, short biographies on bookmark collectors, collection reviews, letters from collectors, and was written with a really informal and welcoming style. Packed with photocopies of bookmarks, articles written on a typewriter, and handwritten annotations, each six to eight page issue served as a great resource on collecting bookmarks.

I have issues from 1992 through 2003 although based on the volume numbering I believe she started the newsletter in 1986. I still use these issues as reference material, and I’ll be quoting from it in future posts.

Ms. Huegel wrote a nice article in 1990 for the Mountain States Collector describing how she started collecting bookmarks.
