Since May of 2004, the Centre for Fine Print Research has been periodically putting on an amazing exhibition series called Bookmarks. The current exhibition is Bookmarks IV and runs from September (now) until February 2007.
Participating artists contribute editions of 100 bookmarks to be collected into sets. The sets are sent to galleries, bookstores, and libraries where the individual bookmarks are distributed for free. The goal is to introduce more people to the work of these artists and to promote fine print.
Bookmarks IV has 58 artists participating, with 6100 bookmarks being distributed. The CFPR reports a wide variety of media represented: painting, photography, embroidery, digital print, hand drawn, photocopied, rubber stamped, folded, cut, sewn, and knitted. The artists are listed with an image of their works on the website.
The closest venue to me is in Oakland, so it will probably be a few months before I get the chance to see the show in person. But I’m going to make a point to stop by during our next Northern California trip. I want to see these works of art in person, as well as snag one for my collection. They look spectacular.
