So, we had two great kids visiting yesterday: Ema is 8 and Asher is 4. By the time I came home from work, somehow Harriet and their Mom had both of the kids sweeping the leaves off of our deck. They were excited and pretty thorough, and I helped them get the leaves into our green waste bin.
While we were working, they confided that Harriet promised them some reward. I realized I had something that I could add, and I subtly asked whether they liked to read. “Oh, yes!” exclaimed Ema and she told me about the books she was reading. Then I heard all the words that Asher can now read, CAT being at the top of the list.
I have a stash of plastic bookmarks for kids made by Gold Crest, Inc. here in Santa Barbara. They’re from a discontinued line called Book-a-Roo which I rescued from a scrap bin, but they are in great shape and are pretty cute. There are at least three different characters in the set, and I picked out one for each of the kids. These were a BIG HIT, although they were both excited for different reasons.
Ema already had 2 other characters from this bookmark set. So for her, this was a brand new addition to her collection.
For Asher, he was excited to have his first bookmark. And it had a WORM on it (a cute bookworm with glasses). He immediately ran to show his Mom.
Harriet just gave them Peruvian finger puppets. Humph! Try collecting those (oh wait, I guess we do ..)
