Our collections are an expression of our passion for history. That ’s the persepctive I’ve taken away from a new article by Deanna Dahlsad on the Collector’s Quest blog. The article is titled “When Things Are More Than Just Objects” and discusses the motivation of collector, and what the collection represents.
The Collector’s Quest site generally focusses on specific collectables and collections from the point of view of various collector/contributors. But this article examined collecting in general. My favorite quote:
You are the curator of your own museum; you know why it exists, what affects how you build it, and what it means
The article also directed me to an announcement from the University of Southern California’s Huntington Early Modern Studies Institute (USC-Huntington). May 11 and 12, 2007 they are hosting an international conference named “Collecting Across Cultures in the Early Modern World.” I think it would be interesting to see the range of research done on collecting and its influence on culture. I’m considering attending.
