Second Pass at Organizing the Collection

October 28th, 2006 · 5 Comments

Collection 1Now that I’ve had a chance to do some initial organizing, it’s time to really start sorting. I spent a long Saturday sorting through all of the bookmarks while watching some videos. All of the larger, three dimensional bookmarks were collected into separate drawers, and all of the paper and thin material bookmarks into one of the protective envelopes that I’d acquired.

Collection 2I also spent a lot of time arranging the paper bookmarks stored in the binder. I gathered them into some commonly themed pages: library promotions, reading, science fiction, book promotion, etc. That helped me find duplicates and select bookmarks that were in the best condition.

Collection 3At this point, I’ve made at least one pass through all of the bookmarks, and have put them in some sort of protective cover or placed them in a safe drawer. I still don’t have a total count (a reasonable question that other collectors have asked me), but now that I have a sense of the number of duplicate bookmarks I have, there are over 200 unique paper bookmarks in the binder, over 100 bookmarks in protective covers, and another 100 bookmarks in the drawers that are three dimensional: either sculptural, made of a thick material, or crafted in a way that keeps them from fitting in a protective cover. There are probably another 300 to 400 duplicate paper bookmarks.
Although I’ve been organizing, I can’t really say the collection has much organization. I think that’s the next big effort.

I was interested to see that you store your bookmarks in binders which look a bit like mine. I still have lots in a box to sort out and it takes time - sorting them into categories and checking out which are duplicated. I enjoyed reading your post.

    Thanks for stopping by, Anne!
Yeah, it was quite a bit of time to make that pass through the collection, and that’s probably why I haven’t rushed right back. Of course, more bookmarks have come in and now they need to be sorted into the collection.
The binder is a large one that I had handy, and I’ve been thinking about breaking the set down into more multiple, topic-oriented binders. Any thoughts based on your experience?

Could you tell me where you get the plastic sleeves you store your bookmarks in? Thank you

    Hi Anne,
I’m glad you found the info you were looking for. For anyone else looking my review of some sleeves, it’s in a post named Sleeves for Organization and Protection.
