The Koffler Center Of The Arts is organizing The Bookmark Project for their annual Jewish Book Fair. They are looking for submissions of two original and functioning bookmarks from practicing artists or fine art students. The deadline is October 1, 2007.
Their theme this year is Paradox, and here’s the description from their submissions form:
The bookmark assumes an inherently paradoxical role. It is at once a partner to the reader, while remaining intimately engaged with the physical text; it is a mediator between the reader and the book, and yet it does not arbitrate conflict; it is silent as it promotes information; it is transient and in constant motion, but certainly a point of stability in an otherwise constant flux of information processing. Indeed the bookmark’s nuanced role has a parallactic effect: its very position and purpose appears to vary when viewed from different perspectives.
The Koffler Centre is located in Toronto, Canada and the Fair will take place there between November 4 and 11, 2007. The bookmarks will be placed in 8,000 books on display in their Community Centre and also displayed separately in another Gallery throughout November. They expect approximately 10,000 people to attend the fair.
