Several months ago, Harriet went to an estate sale and bought these two bookmarks. From the nature of the other items for sale, it was clear that this was the home of a Jewish woman who had survived the holocaust, and so it was a particularly poignant set to bring home
Each of the metal bookmarks is mounted onto a folded sales card, and inside the fold is a brief description of the symbol in the bookmark. I knew about the Star of David of course, but I’d never heard of the Chumsah.
Luckily, the little blurb in the packaging describes the Chumsah as being part of the Jewish tradition for over 1500 years and is derived from the Semitic word for five. It represents the protective hand of God and is often used as a good luck charm. Again, this is particularly significant given the provenance of the bookmark.
Both of these bookmarks are from the PageMarker product line of Marbex, who is a maker of custom designed metal gifts.
