Bookmarks in the News Update No. 2

October 21st, 2007 · 1 Comment

There have been quite a few bookmark related items in the news since my last update:

Create a Bookmark in Crete, IL

The Crete (Illinois) Public Library is holding a bookmark design contest with the goal of encouraging kids to read. They’ve teamed with a local bank to sponsor the event. There are two age groups for entering, kids in first through third grades and kids in fourth through sixth. The deadline for entries is November 2.

La Cañada, CA Bookmark Contest

Similarly, the La Cañada Flintridge Library is also holding a bookmark contest for children. They’ve teamed up with a corporate sponsor and have age related categories: kindergarten, second grade, third grade, fifth grade, sixth grade, and eighth grade. The theme is Rise Up Reading and the deadline is October 27.

Los Alimitos-Rossmore, CA Bookmark Contest

Even more similarly (sorry about the grammatical torture) there’s another bookmark contest for kids sponsored by the Los Alamitos-Rossmoor Library. Their theme is also Rise Up Reading although their deadline is November 17. Los Alamitos and La Cañada are on opposite sides of Los Angeles and I believe in different counties so there’s bound to be some cross influence although they are different contests.

Asim Maner (Mirage Bookmarks) Interview

The Ephemera Blog (which is a great blog to read) has an interview of Asim Maner from Mirage Bookmarks. I’ve previously posted about Mirage Bookmarks because they make some beautiful bookmarks and the website is an amazing resource. It’s a good interview and it’s interesting to hear Asim’s experiences as a collector and publisher.

Bookmark Making Workshop in Charlotte, NC

The Charlotte NC Public Library is conducting a bookmark making workshop. It’s limited to teens in either Middle School or High School. It’ll be happening on Tuesday afternoon, October 30th, and sounds like a nice, craft oriented workshop.

Collecting Professionals

No, this isn’t an article about finding professionals and putting them in a collection; it’s about the intimidating effect of people who collect professionally.

I regularly follow the Collector’s Quest blog and Deanna Dahlsad in particular. She’s written several interesting articles that are about collecting in general rather than about specific collections. This one is about her own experiences meeting with appraisers and professionals from museums and getting over the initial intimidation she felt going to them for help and advice. Really interesting and I recommend reading it.

BiblioBuffet: Bookmark Pointers

Of course Laine Farley has another fascinating article over at BiblioBuffet. This one looks at the pointing hand symbol used in typography, books, and bookmarks. She illustrates the article with several fine examples from her own collection.

Hi Alan, I wanted to thank you for your support (and I do blush when I read what you have to say!)

I cannot find your email contact, would you email me?
