Bookmarks are great souvenirs. I bought these 14 bookmarks at a little craft market in the town of Castro on Isla Grande de Chiloe in Chile. As Harriet and I were walking through the market, I remember seeing these and being pretty excited about the images and the descriptions. Harriet looked at me and said “We’ll, they’re cheap enough that you better get them all.” It’s nice having a supportive partner.
I dug through the piles on the vendor’s booth and made sure I had a sample of each type. There are a lot of mythological creatures that are part of the local folklore, and they play that up pretty heavily for the tourists. But I like the way these bookmarks have a single creature (or in some cases an attraction) along with its description on a single bookmark. They’re like little encyclopedia pages.
