I’m currently traveling in Guatemala, which is why my posts have been somewhat infrequent. Internet access is pretty good, but traveling creates its own demands, and so I haven’t had as much time to scour the web for bits of bookmark news and information.

However, I have had time to add a couple of new items to my collection, and I thought I’d show them off. Of course, Guatemala is known for its beautiful weaving and embroidery, so I had to have one (or many!) of the woven bookmarks. They’re done for the tourists, but since I fit that category I’m quite pleased.

The second bookmark I bought has a picture embossed in metal, mounted onto a leather backing. I was quite taken by the piece and although I’ve seen a lot of the woven bookmarks throughout Guatemala, I have yet to find another vendor selling the metal ones.

I´ll add more postings during our trip if I get the time. Otherwise I’ll be catching up with bookmark news and postings when I return home at the end of November.

Hasta Luego,

Alan

Mark My Time

These bookmarks have a little timer built into them. My initial reaction was “that’s silly”, but then I read a quote from a teacher who pointed out that many children are assigned timed reading sessions. These are fun little tools for kids to keep track of how long they are sitting with a book (and hopefully reading).

I suppose it could also be useful for keeping track of reading rates. I could track my reading rates on different genres, or times of the day. I can keep track of reading rate improvements and download the data into spreadsheets for reading efficiency analysis. Then I could look for localized patterns of …. oh, sorry. My inner engineer burbled out. Let’s just say that I’ve changed my mind about the potential applications of this bookmark.

They start off as a blank greeting card, but there is a perforation that allows the cover to be separated and used as a bookmark. The inside of the card is blank so that you can write any message, and there are 15 different cover/bookmarks to choose from.

Each of the covers is a drawing by illustrator Meredeth Hamilton, and they are printed on a heavy watercolor paper. They are priced at$3.95 each (about the price of a nice greeting card) and are available from some retail stores and from their website.
